Creating New Unknowns Through Mystery
About
In an age where AI predicts the future and algorithms optimize every aspect of human behavior, the world has become increasingly predictable. Surprises fade. The thrill of the unexpected diminishes. Life grows more efficient—but less wondrous.
UNROUTE Inc. was founded on a single conviction: humans innately thrill at the incomprehensible, are moved by the unexpected, and experience explosive joy when touching the unknown.
We are a creative team dedicated to crafting immersive mystery experiences—weaving narratives into real-world spaces so that participants don't just observe a story but live inside one. Through the formula "Mystery × _____," we create unprecedented experiences that ignite play, stir the heart, and awaken the sense of wonder that modern life has slowly muted.
Our Approach
UNROUTE's mystery experiences are fundamentally different from conventional escape rooms or puzzle-solving games. We call our format "Story-Driven Immersive Mystery"—a new genre where the acts of reading, walking, and thinking are themselves the mechanics that drive the narrative forward.
Participants become characters within the story. Rather than solving puzzles for their own sake, they relive a mystery—tracing clues across real physical spaces, uncovering testimony, and piecing together the truth. The emphasis is not on "solving" but on "experiencing" the story.
Walk through a town following the threads of a story. Participants rediscover the charm of a region as the narrative weaves through its streets, landmarks, and hidden corners.
Castles, museums, ryokan, and historic buildings become stages for immersive mystery narratives, offering visitors a completely new way to experience cultural assets.
A fusion of mystery and gastronomy. Participants enjoy a curated dining experience while simultaneously unraveling a narrative—turning a meal into an unforgettable evening.
Featured Event
An overnight mystery tour held inside Japan's iconic Kinokuniya Shinjuku Main Store—a 9-story bookstore transformed into a living novel after closing hours.
On the night of January 31, 2026, UNROUTE Inc. launched its debut large-scale production at KINOFES 2026—the first-ever all-night festival held at Kinokuniya Books' flagship Shinjuku store.
Under the concept of "A Novel You Experience," participants took on the role of detectives investigating a novelist's mysterious death and the cursed manuscript left behind. Guided by audio narration, they explored the darkened nine floors of the bookstore.
The experience lasted 90–120 minutes, blending reading, walking, and reasoning into a seamless narrative journey. The bookstore itself became part of the story, creating an entirely new form of reading experience.
Written and directed by UNROUTE founder Mifuyu Ando, with mystery direction by Ryunosuke Sakai (Rabbithole), the production earned coverage from Asahi Shimbun, Mainichi Shimbun, Nippon TV, and Bunshun Online.
